A classic winter wedding at the Detroit Athletic Club

What a Winter Wedding in Detroit Really Looks Like (And Why It’s Underrated)

When couples start planning a wedding in Detroit, winter is often the season they overlook first. Cold weather and unpredictable forecasts can make people hesitant.

But the truth? Winter weddings in Detroit are seriously underrated.

1. Turn Your Wedding Into a Full Detroit Weekend

One of the best things about a winter wedding in downtown Detroit is that it naturally becomes a full weekend experience for guests.

Because everyone stays close to the city center, couples can plan fun activities that make the wedding feel like a mini destination celebration.

Some ideas couples love:

  • Catch a game with the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena

  • Go ice skating and explore the restaurants around Campus Martius Park

  • Host a welcome party at one of Detroit’s incredible cocktail bars

  • Plan a post-wedding brunch downtown before everyone heads home

It’s a fun way to give guests a full Detroit experience, not just a few hours at a wedding reception.

2. Historic Detroit Venues Are Perfect for a Black-Tie Wedding

Winter weddings pair beautifully with black-tie celebrations, and historic venues in Detroit provide the perfect setting.

The Detroit Athletic Club is known for its classic architecture, rich interiors, and timeless elegance—making it an ideal venue for couples planning a formal black-tie wedding in Detroit. Guests arrive dressed to the nines, step inside from the cold, and the entire evening instantly feels elevated and sophisticated.

For couples who want their wedding to feel classic, stylish, and a little glamorous, winter is the perfect season to lean into that vibe.

3. Earlier Sunsets Mean Couples Actually Enjoy Their Reception

One unexpected benefit of a winter wedding timeline is how smoothly the day flows.

Because the sun sets earlier in the winter, couples typically complete all of their portraits, wedding party photos, and family photos before cocktail hour even begins. That means once the reception starts, the couple can fully enjoy the celebration.

In the summer, couples often step away from dinner or dancing to catch sunset photos. With a winter wedding, everything is finished earlier—so couples can stay present with their guests and enjoy the party from start to finish.

4. A Downtown Detroit Wedding Feels Like a True Night Out

Winter weddings naturally feel like a big night out in the city. Guests bundle up, arrive downtown dressed up for the evening, and step into a warm, lively celebration.

With the Detroit Athletic Club located in the heart of downtown, couples and their guests get the full experience of a downtown Detroit wedding—city lights, historic architecture, and an unforgettable reception atmosphere.

5. Winter Weddings Feel Intimate in the Best Way

There’s something about winter weddings that brings people together. With everyone gathered inside, the energy of the celebration feels full, lively, and connected.

Instead of spreading out across patios or outdoor spaces, guests stay close to the dance floor, creating a reception that feels warm, vibrant, and incredibly fun.

For couples considering a winter wedding in Detroit, venues like the Detroit Athletic Club prove that the season can be just as beautiful—and often even more memorable—than summer celebrations.

5 Reasons Couples Love a Planterra Conservatory Wedding

If you’re planning a Planterra Conservatory wedding, you’ve probably seen the photos: glass walls, tons of greenery, and an indoor garden that feels completely different from most Michigan wedding venues.

Located in Planterra Conservatory, it’s one of the most popular greenhouse wedding venues in Michigan. Here are five reasons couples keep choosing it.

1. The Venue Already Looks Incredible

The biggest draw of a Planterra Conservatory wedding is the space itself. The conservatory is filled with tropical plants, natural textures, and greenery in every direction.

Most couples keep décor simple because the venue already creates the atmosphere.

Think:

  • candles

  • greenery

  • simple florals

That’s usually enough.

2. The Natural Light Is Amazing

If you’ve searched Planterra Conservatory wedding photos, you’ll notice how bright and clean everything looks.

The entire venue is surrounded by glass, which means soft natural light throughout the day. For couples who care about photography, this is one of the best Detroit area wedding venues for natural light.

3. It Feels Like a Garden Wedding Year-Round

A lot of couples want a garden wedding in Michigan, but outdoor venues can be risky with the weather.

Inside Planterra Conservatory, it always feels green and warm. Even when it’s cold outside, the conservatory still has that indoor garden atmosphere.

4. Everything Happens in One Space

Another reason couples choose a Planterra Conservatory wedding is how simple the flow of the day is.

The ceremony takes place surrounded by greenery, and the reception happens in the same space under candles and string lights. Guests can relax and enjoy the evening without traveling between venues.

5. It’s Easy to Make the Space Your Own

Even though Planterra has a strong look, couples style it in a lot of different ways.

Some weddings feel modern and minimal, others lean romantic, earthy, or editorial. Because the venue already has so much natural texture, it works with a wide range of design styles.

For couples looking for a greenhouse wedding venue in Michigan, Planterra Conservatory continues to be one of the most iconic wedding venues in the Detroit area — especially for couples who want something natural, elegant, and full of light.

Clare + Eric's Spring Wedding at the Lafayette Grande in Pontiac, MI

Clare and Eric were my first wedding of 2022! With the wedding boom that is 2021-2022, I’ve gotten to photograph at many new venues, and it was my first time shooting at the Lafayette Grande in Pontiac, MI! I absolutely loved the architecture inside and out, the brightness of the space, the chandeliers, large staircase window, and the food was excellent, too!

Clare and Eric had a classic style with pops of spring color, and I absolutely loved the florals that Olive’s Bloombox created for their wedding. The bouquets and centerpieces were stunning! A big thank you to my second shooter Amanda for capturing all these beautiful detail shots of the table settings and centerpieces.

From our arrival to the first look, portraits, ceremony and reception, everything went smoothly, which doesn’t always happen in the wedding world! The rain stayed away until portraits were over, and we stayed on time for the entire day.

It was such a pleasure to work with these two recent med school grads, and I wish them luck as they move across the country for their residencies! Congrats Clare and Eric! What a fantastic start to 2022!

Hannah + Martin's Summer Dearborn Inn Wedding

Hannah + Martin’s wedding at the Dearborn Inn was one of my favorites of 2021. Hannah’s classic style gave off Kate Middleton vibes, and they scheduled their day so that we had an ample amount of time for photos. We literally got so many bride and groom creative portraits just spending an hour walking the beautiful grounds of the Dearborn Inn. I love the Dearborn Inn because there are so many spots for photos with different backgrounds from gardens to brick archways. You never run into another wedding party and you can have everything in one spot (getting ready and ceremony and reception). It makes things so easy. Also, there are spots for photos if it rains! There is a gorgeous lobby and several covered porches that are beautiful and perfect for photos- rain or no rain! Hannah and Martin were so happy and calm; it made the day a pleasure to photograph!

Meghan + Andy's Wedding at St. Hugo and Birmingham Country Club

Meghan and Andy were married on the most beautiful June day! I was mid-seventies, no humidity, with beautiful blue skies and a light breeze. They held their wedding ceremony at the Stone Chapel at St Hugo in Bloomfield Hills and had their reception at the Birmingham Country Club in Birmingham, Michigan. They actually met at the BCC, so how great is it that they could hold their wedding at the place that they met?! Here are a few of my favorites from their wedding day. Congratulations again, you two!

{A big thank you to my second shooter Brian, who captured a few of the images included in this wedding day story}.

Oksana + Corey's Cafe Cortina Wedding in Farmington Hills, MI

Oksana and Corey held their wedding at the beautiful Cafe Cortina in Farmington HIlls, Michigan. Everything was perfect: the weather, the food, the gorgeous patio for photos, the beautiful bouquets by Twigs and Branches Floral, and all of the DIY details that Oksana and Corey put so much work into, even though they planned the entire wedding in UNDER THREE MONTHS. Can you believe it? I'm not sure how they did it and how they remained so calm and laid back, but they pulled it off, and it was amazing.

Oksana and Corey's wedding was so unique because of the blend of Canadian, Ukrainian and Kazakh traditions that were included. There was vodka, jokes a plenty, traditional dress and song...it was pretty incredible, not to mention fun.

While there are so many great photos from the day, here are a few of my favorites to tell the story:
