Fall Family Portrait Session in Grosse Pointe

So many wonderful family sessions to share from this fall! One of my favorites was this one. I have loved watching this family grow from engagement, to wedding, to newborn, and now first year! The day of the session, the weather was not great- it was chilly and rainy. So, we opted to do them at the family home, and stepped out for a few foliage photos in the backyard in between rain sprinkles. Baby D definitely was happier inside, and so we did several inside next to the large windows for some natural light. Here are some of my favorites~

East Lansing Fall Mini Sessions

Fall mini session day in East Lansing on the MSU campus was a success!! And can you believe it was 75 degrees on a Michigan November afternoon?! It was crazy! I love the MSU gardens in all seasons, and they did not disappoint! Even in the second week of November, there were still trees with leaves and we got some great fall shots!

As a former preschool teacher, I know how stressful family portraits with small children can be, so we play games! On this day we played red light green light, going on a bear hunt, Simon says, and had dance parties with their favorite songs. It was the biggest compliment when one family said at the end of their session, “Normally we feel defeated at the end of family pictures, but this was actually fun!”. I can’t promise that is the case every time (30 degree weather just might not give us happy kids), but I try! Here are some of my favorites from the minis…

It's that time of year again! Fall means Christmas card and gift giving season are gearing up, so if fall colors, scarves, apple orchards, and boots are your thing and you need holiday cards and gifts, the time is now to reach out and schedule. Availability (especially weekends!) is limited!

This year I'll be offering fall portraits in both Michigan and Rhode Island! Email caitlinmaloneyphotography@gmail.com for more information or to book.

Below are images from a recent extended family session in East Lansing, MI!

Let's face it: holiday photos are stressful! Finding the perfect outfits, making sure everyone has a hair cut, packing snacks, coming up with bribes, and dealing with behavior from less than enthusiastic participants are all some of the things we go through leading up to our holiday photo shoots. Well, let me tell you, photographers are not immune to these occurrences, either.

You'd think as a photographer, I would have my child's holiday photos planned out perfectly. Reality is that you are so busy photographing other families, engagements and weddings, that sometimes your own family photos fall to the wayside. Case in point: I didn't have our holiday or Julian's birthday photos set up (his birthday is in November so I have been combining them), but when there was a cancellation at one of the mini sessions, I called Grandma (who was babysitting), told her to throw him in the car after nap, put on the clothes he had on the previous day, and drive him to our shooting location. We got in about 10 minutes of happy shooting before he threw up from running so hard in the cold weather (he was sick but there is no way to keep an active toddler sitting still). He also totally has a bowl haircut from an aggressive stylist from his first salon visit (I think I let out a large gasp when I saw the results of the first way-too-short snip). BUT, even though I have less than 10 good photos from our mini-mini-mini session, I am happy with them. They are Julian: active, happy, smiling, curious. I can't wait to frame this series and hang it on our wall.

So, even though they are stressful, they are totally worth it :) . Here are a few faves!

This fall has been a whirlwind as I've begun to run my business not only in Rhode Island, but also in Michigan. I was worried I would have a hard time finding places as beautiful to shoot in the Lansing area as I did in Rhode Island (purely because it's on the ocean), but I have been pleasantly surprised by stumbling upon beautiful spots like Frances Park in Lansing. I LOVE the results I'm getting from shooting at this location-- see some favorites below :) .

Bristol, Rhode Island Family Portraits at Colt State Park

And just like that, summer is over and Christmas card season is in full swing! Where did the time go??

And I just can't believe I've been photographing this family every summer since their eldest was 11 months old! It's been so great watching their family grow. Even though they live in Florida now, they still come back to Rhode Island every summer, which means we still get to do family portraits every year. Yay!

This year, we photographed their session at beautiful Colt State Park in Bristol- my favorite park in Rhode Island.
